The next parliament session will be held from October 17 to November 21, by which time the Indo-US nuclear deal is expected to go through all the processes.

Parliamentary affairs minister Vyalar Ravi announced on Tuesday evening that the five week session will be a continuation of the two-day session held on July 21, as the Lok Sabha had not been prorogued.

The decision to push the parliament session to October, however, prompted a sharp reaction from the Left parties, who charged that it was as ‘‘clear subversion of democracy...to dovetail our parliamentary schedule to the time table of the American Congress’’.

The government managers though sidestepped question on whether the October session would be the last session of the 14th Lok Sabha. It has been arranged in such a way that the possibility of a winter session, which normally begins in November, is ruled out.

The schedule for the session appeared to have been fixed to accommodate Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit in September to UN for the General Assembly. Prime Minister Singh has already assured Parliament that he would come back to the House after all the processes—IAEA Safeguards agreement, waiver from NSG and approval by the US Congress - for the implementation of the deal are completed.

The session is expected to be held in the shadow of assembly polls in four states—Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. The term of the Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir is also ending by the year- end.
