Taking time off his busy schedule, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday spent a few hours with sailors and officers of the navy on his first visit to the Eastern Naval Command in Vishakapatnam.

The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by Minister for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal, was briefed about the strategic role being played by the navy and on the latest acquisitions including the Upgraded Russian Kilo class submarines and the latest stealth frigates and destroyers by the Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta.

The highlight of the visit was the Prime Minister boarding the Indian Navy's latest acquisition 'INS Jalashwa', a ship-landing dock bought from the US navy, where he addressed 400 smartly turned out sailors and Officers. Later he freely interacted with them over Tea.

Singh was also given a lengthy briefing on submarine operations by the commanding officer of INS Sindhuvir, an upgraded Russian Kilo class submarines.

The Prime Minister and his entourage, which included Minister of State for Mines, T Subbirami Reddy and Prithviraj Chauhan, also boarded a frontline naval missile destroyer INS Ranvir.
