



Bangalore, Dec 26: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s ambitious $5 billion (Rs 25,000 crore) project in Karnataka, proposed in August 2004, and consequently shut down by petroleum and natural gas minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, has now got the prime minister’s blessings, said Karnataka chief minister N Dharam Singh.
“Recently I had a discussion with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about this project. The Prime Minister has approved the project. This $5 billion project is on,” Mr Singh told FE.
The Rs 25,000-crore project in Mangalore’s Coastal Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) included the setting up of an LNG terminal and a 1,500 mw gas-based power plant. An MoU was signed in August 2004 between ONGC and the Karnataka government for the development of the CSEZ.
The CSEZ was expected to attract mainly petroleum and petrochemical related industries, in addition to other manufacturing and services industries. The government was also looking at private participation in the development of the SEZ.
