Orissa will need 60,000 skilled labour by 2015, says study

: If Orissa were to implement all the MoU projects it has signed, it will create a demand for 60,000 skilled manpower by 2015, says a report prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for the Confederation of Indian Industry. The report -- Skill Gap Analysis for Orissa -- says with an investment outlay of nearly Rs 3.5 lakh crore, Orissa is all set to create huge employment opportunities across the sectors.

“Metal and manufacturing sector will witness a capacity addition of nearly 58 mt by 2015 which would lead to an additional requirement of 60,000 skilled employees like engineers, diploma holders and ITI passed technicians," says the report which was released by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on the occasion of the CII’s annual industrial exhibition Enterprise Orissa 2009,which concluded here on Monday.

According to PwC research, metal and manufacturing, mineral and mining, chemical and fertilizer, power, IT & ITeS, tourism, retail, health care and port operations sectors would be the major employment generators by 2015.

In the mining sector, MoUs for nearly 75 million tonnes have been signed with the government of Orissa . This is going to generate an additional employment of nearly 1 to 1.25 lakh. Power sector would see an additional requirement of nearly 30,000. Chemical and fertilizer sector would also see a growth of 10-12 per cent, the report points out.

The growth in the manufacturing sector would boost the services sector particularly organized retail, healthcare and tourism in the state. The services sector growth would be further fuelled by the growth of IT and ITeS sectors in the state. Post the current recession period, the state would see an additional requirement of 10,000 to 12,000 skilled employees in the IT and ITeS sector by 2015. By the same time the organized retail sector would grow over 150 per cent of the current size and an additional 10,000 direct employment opportunities would be created. Tourism sector which is now facing a negative growth would turn around and there would be an addition of nearly 3000 rooms in the state leading to an additional employment of 9,000-12,000 people. Demand for professionals related to healthcare sector would grow as corporate hospitals like Apollo and Care set up their hospitals in the state.
