Bhubaneswar, Oct 26: The Orissa government has decided to award plots of land to private companies for setting up mini and micro hydel power stations.
"We have received proposals from private companies keen to set up mini and micro hydel power stations in the state", state energy minister Surya Narayan Patro said here on Friday. The technical committee of the state energy department was examining the proposals, he added.
The state government has identified 82 sites near various rivers and canals for mini and micro hydel stations. These plants will have potential to generate 700mw. Out of that, 28 sites have been awarded to private promoters. The proposed power stations will have generation capacities ranging from 100kw to 25mw.
The minister said the state government would take steps to provide an incentive of 14 paise per unit of power generated by the mini and micro hydel stations.
According to him, the government will lay stress on generating energy from non-conventional sources to minimise environmental hazards created by thermal power stations.
