A parrot came as a godsend to a family in southern England when its squawking led to their escape from their house on fire.
Francis Hall and his sons, Sam, 18, and Trevor, 40 were asleep when the blaze started in the kitchen of their home inHampshire on Sunday morning.
The family was woken by Bob, the three-year-old African grey parrot, whose growling became frantic as the flames spread to the living room. The blaze seemed to have started in the microwave oven.
The trio, along with the bird, escaped the burning property. They suffered smoke inhalation while the parrot survived unscathed.
Sam Hall told The Daily Telegraph, “I used to find Bob very annoying with his growling and squawking, but not now.
“He saved our lives. We just got out in time.
“As soon as we got outside, the windows blew out and the fire took over the whole house.”
59-year-old Hall, who is divorced, said he may now reward the bird with a female companion.
“I am definitely going to get him a treat, some new toys, a swing, a bell and a mirror,” he said. “It might be the right time to get him a mate.”
