In a novel way to promote tourism in the North East and remove ‘sense of alienation’ among people of the region, the Centre on Wednesday sought cooperation from its employees, asking them to visit the region and make it a favourite tourist destination.
Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Mani Shankar Aiyar said his ministry wanted to promote the region as a destination for the government officials travelling on Leave Travel Concession (LTC) and has already sent a proposal to Finance Ministry to allow air travel facility under LTC.
“We want to make you ambassadors of North East. It is a wonderful region and you must visit it,” Aiyar said addressing a national conclave on Promoting North-East as a Destination for LTC Travellers.
Describing the northeastern states as “unique and spectacular”, Aiyar said the people of the region feel alienated and the Central government employees could play a pivotal role in changing their perception.
“Make the region a favourite destination when you avail the the Leave Travel Concession,” he told officials from various ministries.
Aiyar said he has already sent a proposal to Finance Ministry to allow air travel facility under LTC as some areas are not connected by the railway.
