With the number of Small & Medium Businesses (SMBs) deploying latest technology increasing day by day, companies like Microsoft are also launching new products keeping in mind the needs of these Small and Medium Businesses. Though the adoption of technology by SMBs is faster in the metros, companies in non-metros are also emerging fast in the IT arena.

Rajesh Kumar, head marketing, SMB, Microsoft India told FE, “Over the last 3-4 years, SMBs have been contributing significantly to our total business revenue. Being a thrust area for Microsoft special products have been launched for these firms ranging from operating systems to ERP solutions.

The products are easy to use and customer friendly. The small business server, windows server has been designed for start-ups, the exchange server can standardize the work flow for a growing entity and the rest of products can bring various functionalities together. We also have Microsoft office's Small Business Edition for the new companies.”

Microsoft has direct offices in 16 cities with 400 trained partners at present and soon new offices will be coming up in 3 more cities. New offerings for the SMBs include hosting solutions, ERP solutions etc.

One such Melbourne based group that benefited out of using the Microsoft technology has grown to be an Australian $120 million group. The OCA group, which started its operations in Chandigarh as a small company in 1996 as Oceanic Consultants, has set up its base in Melbourne and expanded its services with two new businesses.

The group's company-BPO intelligence is helping the educational institutions around the globe to cut their cost and enhance the efficiency. The other one–Object Next Software is developing IT systems for the institutions involved in recruitment of international students by using Microsoft technology.

Naresh Gulati, CEO of Oceanic Consultants informed FE, “After we implemented Microsoft Exchange the problems of security, scalability and standardisation were taken care of. Our gross profit margins have grown to 85% last fiscal.

The communication costs have reduced. The MS team of experts draws a roadmap of technology for the business which helps in upgradation as well as streamlining the whole process. We have 14 offices of Oceanic Consultants in India and plan to take the toll to 70 by the end of this financial year.
