National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (Nabard), jointly owned by the government of India and Reserve Bank of India, has sanctioned Rs 1.08 crore subsidy for six new multi-purpose cold storages in West Bengal during 2007-08. This aid comes under Capital Investment Subsidy Scheme to create an added storage capacity of 17,185 tonne.

In 2002, the Centre started the scheme to set up cold storages across the country. Since then, a total of 39 cold storages have been set up in different districts of Bengal like Howrah, Murshidabad, Bardhaman, Bankura, Hooghly, Birbhum, Malda, North & South 24 Parganas, Jalpaiguri and Uttar Dinajpur.

In 2006-07, three new cold storages were set up in the state, investing Rs 1.19 crore, with a capacity of 9,143 tonne.

"A total amount of Rs 12.16 crore has been sanctioned till now for all these 39 cold storages," said Nabard assistant general manager in Bengal, Suribabu.

"At present, we are waiting for the extension of this scheme by the government for the current fiscal," he said. An announcement on the scheme by the government is expected by this June, he added.

In the national corpus, however, Suribabu said: "A sum of Rs 374.24 crore has been sanctioned by Nabard till now under the subsidy scheme to set up 1,383 cold storages across the country with a capacity of 67.05 lakh tonne."
