North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Delhi, has joined IBM’s global intelligent utility network (IUN), IBM said. The network is a coalition of select global utilities and is aimed at accelerating adoption of “smart grid technologies,” the company noted, adding that IUN will transform the way power is delivered, managed and used by utilities across the world. NDPL distributes electricity across the north and western parts of Delhi.

As member of IUN, it will work towards rapid creation of solutions, use industry-based standards and informed policy to drive the adoption of IUN technologies and solutions, an IBM statement said. NDPL is the first Indian utility to join the coalition, which includes utilities from the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. IBM said that the collaboration will enable NDPL to benefit from the learning of other major utility companies globally, gain access to best practices as part of the maturity model, provide inputs and guide standards development, and access IUN architecture councils, while also gaining potential benefit from project “jump starts” .

The initiative is expected to help create local capabilities which could be leveraged to assist other utilities for transformation through adoption of technology and best practices, IBM noted.
