New Delhi, Dec 22: The world’s second largest mobile phone maker, Motorola, on Thursday launched India’s cheapest GSM handset C115 at Rs 1,700. Entry level phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and LG are available in the range of Rs 3,000-4,000.
C115 is also the first GSM phone in the sub-$40 range globally. With this, Motorola hopes to grow its India market share, currently at 7%. Nokia dominates with a share of 59%, Samsung’s is 13%. C115 comes with a black and white display with up to 500 minutes of talk time. Motorola has tied up with mobile operators Hutch and Bharti for distribution.
Motorola is the only handset maker to be awarded the tender to produce sub-$40 and sub-$30 phones by the GSM Association. The company will launch its sub-$30 phone in 2006.
Software development for the sub-$40 C11-X series is being done at Motorola’s R&D centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad. After Samsung and LG, Motorola too will launch its Indian manufacturing facility in 2006. It estimates demand for the sub-$40 phone to come from 50% of the GSM base.
