: Construction work on six premier hospitals along the lines of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Science (Aiims) is expected to start in December. These are to come up in Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh, as announced by the health minister, Anbumani Ramadoss. The only trouble, he feels, is that Aiims is fast losing its sheen. Not much research happens at the institute any more, though its original objective was to delve deep into various therapeutic areas of Indian relevance. This sorry state of affairs persists despite a doubling of funds allocated to it, from Rs 250 crore to Rs 500 crore. There is, though, another institute the minister is impressed with: Chandigarh’s Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI). It has overtaken Aiims on research. But models are models, very hard to change once public perceptions are moulded by it. So, the “Aiims model” it is.
Nth time
On Tuesday, Nokia did the world a good turn. It unfurled “the next episode in mobile entertainment”, with Isha Shravani doing the honours— by launching the N81 and N95 8-gigabyte devices of its N series. The event featured a panel discussion on the future of mobile entertainment, and Eavesdropper had to hear the joys of the unfolding thrills for the nth time. That was the price to pay for the dance performance by Isha to follow. And she did not disappoint. But then, there was a catch. The future of entertainment is supposed to be some sort of infinite series, and there were more performers and more dances. On and on, till nobody dared dispute it.
