Mumbai: Days after the controversy over Sachin Tendulkar’s remarks on Mumbai, the state government has decided to felicitate him for his achievements saying he has brought glory and pride to India and Maharashtra.

The state Cabinet on Thursday passed a resolution moved by chief minister Ashok Chavan felicitating Tendulkar for scoring 17,000 runs in ODIs and playing for 20 years.

The resolution says that Tendulkar, through “his exemplary game, has given immense pleasure to cricketers and Indians. Tendulkar’s success in cricket is because of his sincerity, efforts and national pride. His game has brought immense pride to Maharashtra and India.”

Earlier this week, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray in an open letter to Tendulkar published in the party mouthpiece Saamna had given “friendly advice”, asking him to refrain from commenting on Mumbai and political issues.

Tendulkar during an interview to celebrate his two decade long career in cricket, had said that Mumbai belonged to all Indians. He had further added that he was proud to be a Maharashtrian but he was an Indian first, which invited the wrath of the Sena chief.

The Sena were severely condemned by all political parties across the country for attacking the icon of the cricketing world.
