: MBA FINANCE
I want to pursue MBA in finance. I am a science graduate. Please tell me about the future options for me in this field.
—Tushar Deore
The future looks to be good for MBAs in finance, but more so for those who have qualified from prominent business schools as they get the most prestigious job offers from campus. The best way to ensure that you get a good launch pad for a career in finance is to work very hard on the management entrance test preparation.
A consistently good academic record so far will add weightage to your MBA application to a premier business school as would strong extra-curricular activities and work experience—ideally related to finance, after graduation. A couple of years of work experience after graduation would enhance your credibility for admission to MBA finance.
The course prepares you for a variety of career paths such as management of financial institutions as also non-financial organisations, investments and securities brokerage, financial analysis of investments, and general management positions. Strong analytical-reasoning skills, quantitative aptitude, problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, decision-making skills and proficiency in the use of computers are useful for aspiring finance professionals.

CAT 2009
I am pursuing a B Tech course. I want to start my preparations for CAT 2009. How should I start my preparations? How can I prepare for the English section?
—Karan
You can start with an overview of what CAT papers look like. Visit the website www.catiim.in and the websites of the IIMs to download previous years’ CAT papers. Although the pattern may change from year to year, the abilities tested are proficiency in English through comprehension exercises that could include verbal ability testing, quantitative aptitude—knowledge and application of secondary school mathematics with some inputs of plus two maths, data interpretation and reasoning skills.
To handle the English section more effectively, you should develop and enhance your range of reading. Get used to a variety of reading material across a variety of subjects from magazines (national and international), newspapers, and non-fiction to fiction. This will increase your reading speed and help you to add new words to your vocabulary, and make you more confident about the meaning and context of application of the words you use regularly.
Also work with sample CAT papers, actual CAT questions, and relevant preparation material available to you. In the final four to six months before CAT, focus on developing the right attitudes and strategies for handling the paper based on your analysis of prior experiences of handling mock tests. At the same time, ensure consistently good performance in B Tech and try to be involved in extra-curricular activities in college, all of which add weightage to your admission to business schools.
CORPORATE LAW
I am in my last semester of LL B (Hons). I am interested in doing LLM in Corporate/International Business Law in UK and then join a corporate firm in India. Would it be better to do LLM in UK or MBA from India? Can I do MBA by correspondence once I am working?
—Tanu
You can be placed in corporate law right after your LLB without any additional training. Distance-learning Master of Business Laws from the National Law School of India University could enhance your knowledge. You may pursue a correspondence MBA while you are working. LLM from the UK would broaden your knowledge, perspective and enhance your career opportunities including international placements.
