Left, BSP, UNPA to launch agitation against Congress

Unfazed by the defeat in the trust vote in Parliament on Tuesday, Left parties, the BSP, the UNPA and several other small parties decided here on Wednesday to launch "a series" of agitations against the Centre on issues including Indo-US nuclear deal and the price rise.

The parties also condemned "the way" the Congress won the trust vote and said it has no moral right to continue in the office. The parties have also decided to form a coordination committee, which will comprise one leader from each party, to finalise the venues and the nature of the agitations. 10 parties, including the JD(S) and the RLD, attended the breakfast meeting, arranged at Mayawati's house here.

Though TRS leader K Chandrasekhara Rao came to her house, he did not wait for the press conference.

Addressing the press conference, Mayawati said democracy was defeated by the Congress in the House on Tuesday. "The UPA government must be congratulating itself for yesterday's (Tuesday) victory in Parliament. But it was the defeat of the democracy," she said. She said all the parties attended the meeting unanimously condemned the "Congress's purchasing of MPs for votes."

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said the UPA government has lost the trust of the nation on Tuesday. "The Manmohan Singh government has lost its moral authority. All the political parties present decided to launch a national level campaign on pressing issues before the people," Karat said.

However, Karat made it clear that the strategy of the present association of these parties is just to "fight on" common issues. He refuse to term it a pre-poll alliance or a third front. "We have got together to conduct a campaign against price rise, agrarian crisis leading to farmers suicides, Indo-US nuclear deal, communal forces and against gross misuse of government institutions like CBI," Karat said.

The leaders did not give a specific answer when asked whether former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa will also be invited for the meetings.

I don't expect Jayalalitha, the other Behenji, to become part of the third front. That would mean, that two women, with huge egos, sit on the same table. Even in the West, that will raise eyebrows if it happens, in India, it is simply impossible.Mayawati and Jayalalitha just don't mix.
