Mumbai, Feb 8: At a time when the government has allowed private participation in research, production and maintenance in the defence sector, US-based The Boeing Company on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for jointly exploring business opportunities in India’s defence sector. The signing ceremony took place at the Aero India Aerospace show held in Bangalore.
The $32.4-billion Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, part of The Boeing Company, is one of the world’s largest space and defence businesses, and provides network-centric system solutions to its global military, government and commercial customers.
“The MoU with Boeing adds a new international dimension to our engagements in the strategic sectors of defence and aerospace,” said MV Kotwal, senior executive vice president of L&T. “As a major supplier of critical systems to India’s defence sector for more than four decades, we have worked closely with the establishment in developing and putting into production a range of advanced systems. This new agreement will add depth to our capabilities in the sectors.” The US-based company is a leading provider of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of military aircraft and satellites, the primary systems integrator for US missile defence, and NASA’s largest contractor, a media release said.
“Our goal is to identify and build strong partnerships with a number of key Indian companies,” said Mark Sullivan, vice president of international business development, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. “We want to match the best of India with the best of Boeing, to the equal long-term benefit of both.” Boeing’s business strategy aims to transform product sales into a springboard for private and public industrial partnerships, the release added.
