At the end of another day of political manouevrings, there were clear indications on Thursday night that the Samajwadi Party was firmly on course to striking a deal with the Congress although it put up a show of unity with its allies in the UNPA, and the Left parties appeared to delay their inevitable divorce from the Manmohan Singh government.

After a four-hour meeting of the UNPA, comprising

anti-Congress parties, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and his lieutenant Amar Singh met former President Abdul Kalam, a strong proponent of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"Kalam said that the deal is national interest. We will inform UNPA leaders about our discussions with Kalam, who is a well-known and respected scientist of the country. He is the father of the nuclear technology of the country," Yadav said about his meeting with Kalam.

Mulayam's praise of Kalam and his statement that he

would carry these views to other constituents of the UNPA, who are opposed to the deal, is seen as a strong indication that SP, whose 39 MPs are crucial for the government in case of trial of strength in the Lok Sabha, was not averse to doing a deal with the Congress-led UPA.

I am not able to understand the thesis that a country where povery, hunger, disease, reign supreme should go on making bombs at the costof development.Go and visit the villages and slums of any place in India and you, the rich(but ignorant)will discover that crores of people are still living sub-human lives, not even knowing if they are going to get a meal during the day!The argument advanced by many that it is necessary to thwart attack from China or Pakistan does not convince me.They will have to think thosand times before doing that.Nor can India dare make similar attack on them.Remember atomic weapon has been used only once and that too by America, the most powerful country in the world. The chances of its being used again are almost nil.Wouldn't then be it a luxury for us ?

Fully agree with you. But even Mr. Kalam does not know what is in this deal. I respect Kalam as I respect Sardar Patel, Subash Bose are Rajaji. But with full due respect Mr Kalam is a missile technologist, electronic and mechanical, it does not touch nuclear science. But his thoughts should be respected.

The point is Mr. Kalam can only add on his genre of things like weapons which may even cover the N weapons, but the treaty has a lot of political twist to it which makes it not Mr Kalams cup of tea. The left thu is opposing tooth and nail because it has things like giving away key military secrets of India. We are a sovereign and secular nation, and i dont want some1 to sniff my doorstep.

We all respect Dr.Kalam for his contributions in the scientific arena and his sincerity in approach.Hoewever, the Nuclead Deal is more of political issue between nations not a scientific issue and his comments in this regard is attributed to only the scientific and energy impacts of the deal but not considering the political price Indian state has to pay for this.

Congress and SP had refused to give second term to Mr. Kalam because he told Italiano that according to constitution she can not be appointed as PM of India because she has never revoked Italian nationality. That was the reason that Mr. Kalam was kicked out and a third rate tainted lady is installed as "president". Now both Congress and SP are calling Mr. Kalam as the ocean of knowledge and nuclear expert. I can not understand why Kalam is putting his neck in the noose.

Looks like Vijay hasnt read newspapers for last 1-year or so... Kalams secreatry reveled in pretty plain terms that no such thing ever happened and it was all imgaination of BJP. He stated in fact Kalam made the appointment letter ready for Sonia but she insisted on making MMS the PM during the meeting... So dont spread lies... you know, many such liers later fall into trouble...

Mr.Vijay can't you see - Despite SP and Congi opposed Mr. Kalam's renomination, Mr. Kalam has extended his support for the N-Deal. Because he knows deal is good for the country. Everybody knows that people like Mr. Kalam will always support measures which will help India grow.

But Kalam has never claimed to be a Nulear Scientist. And just because he supports the deal does not make him one either. And it is not at all necessary to be a nuclear scientist to support the deal.Is Manmohan or Sonia or Lalu or Paswan or Pawar or Karunanidhi et al experts on the matter ?By the same corollary Karat, Bardhan et al who have been opposing the deal, can't claim to be experts on the matter. So why single out Dr Kalam for the codemnation? It is indeed extremely painful to see that Kalam is being made the target of attack by different people purely on grounds of political affiliations.I hope this will stop(with the help of your esteemed website)sir. At least we must not be so rude and offensive towards the man who has served the country so well asking nothing in return. Is he any worse than these political rascals be it of the left or right or the centre who have been enjoying the fruits of freedom we got due to the sacrifices of Bhagat Singh, Chadrashekhar Azad, Sukhdeo, Rajguru, Ashfaqullah, Subhash Chandra Bose and the likes? This must stop Mr Editor. You have provided us a forum to discuss matters of national importance but it does not mean that we ought to use it for denigrating a patriot of such stature as Dr Kalam in preference to these political dacoits.I hope my appeal will be heeded.

"cause what you presume is not true", perhaps you are right but like wise we don't know what is in n-deal. I read in the newspapers the of possible reason why Gandhi was not appointed but no one knows the reality, do we know the reality about the deal ? Since US stand to earn tens of billions of dollars from India they will sign the treaty, today or tomorrow.

Nuclear deal and nuclear commerce are two different things. We can have a nuclear deal with US, but the driving force of nuclear commerce will be purely economics, they will have Russia and France to compete with.

» Deal
Posted by Vijay on 2008-07-04 11:14:57.435546+05:30
In that case why US wants desprately to sign the deal if India will do commerce with others ? US must have something for them.

US has 123 agreement with China and Russia too, and both are primary members of NSG, signatories to NPT and CTBT. Yet they have an agreement. India is isolated and no nuclear fuel means no nuclear energy. This is one opportunity to come out of this isolation. Even Iran is signatory to international agreements on nuclear, hence they are construting nuclear plant.

The SP holding hands with the Congress is for convenience only for both. The Left's adamant attitude left no other option for the congress but to tie up with the SP. We are witnessing what a minority party has to suffer if it is power. For everything and anything you have an opposition What we need is a dictatorial raj for a few years then only we shall have a good governance. In todays politics you cannot do anything good as people always are divided on any issue. Never they agree and never one party is able to convince the other its viewpoint.

It is amusing that these small time "experts", who even do not know what nuclear means are roaring on top of their voices. These people even do not know why Congress wants this deal, why Commies are against it and why BJP is refusing to go with Congress. Some rats are saying SP, Congress and Commies are "secular" but BJP is "communal". The fact is why these people, if they have working brains, try to find out precise reasons before start dancing on their key boards. When BJP has said that nuclear deal is bad ? BJP started nuclear deal. After reading the logic of these so-called "educated" people I am not surprised why the most criminals got elected as MPs and MLAs. First find out what nuclear deal contains, what is in favour and what is against our interest then find out exactly the reasons why Congress wants it, Commies don't and why BJP has refused to go with Congress.

» uranium
Posted by HK on 2008-07-04 10:42:57.226524+05:30
Orissa, Ladakh, Chatisgarh and Jharkhand have world class uranium but Commies have provoked villagers against mining because of radio-active yellow cake uranium. But uranium itself is not radio-active unless it is processed. Once again we do not know what actually BJP did or did not accept but diffinitely BJP would not have accepted to sign CTBT and distroyed nuclear weapons when Pakistan and China are developing their arsnal. BJP's talk with USA was in infant stage when BJP lost office. I know one US senetor had said something like this but just note US is more worried than even Manmohan Singh is. When it was asked to Mukherjee to put the deal, including IAEA deal, on table his answer was "there are some secret clauses which can not be disclosed". What are these "secret" clauses ? Give Kashmir to Pakistan, never conduct nuclear test even simulated, slowly distroy nuclear weapons ? What are these "secret" clauses ? Actually no one knows anything about the deal, we all are talking about what has been told to us by newspapers and how we are interpreting it. Do you really trust Indian journalists ?

One has to trust one's government and the collective wisdom of its leaders who run the government, especially in matters of International Treaties. They can't go wrong with the future of this nation, where they leave behind a legacy for those who are yet to come.

Posted by Vijay on 2008-07-04 11:29:16.052882+05:30
Throughout the world every government takes the opposition in confidence before they sign international treaties. But this UPA government held and holds opposition BJP in utter contempt. Why ? Non-Congress parties actually represent 60% population, don't those people have any rights but 40% (minority) go and sign where 60% population might be against it ?

» BJP's view on N Deal
Posted by arun on 2008-07-04 10:47:38.858665+05:30
It is wrong to say that the BJP is against a deal with USA on supply of Uranium. The fact is that the deal is a slavery contract. If one wants to know the BJP view point then he or she must read the articles written by BJP MP Arun Shouri. These articles have appeared in Indian Express and are still available on internet. As far as the SP is concerned I can only say that Hindus have never been defeated by foreigners. They have always been defeated by their own breed.

» Deal or No Deal
Posted by Anand on 2008-07-04 11:36:30.264114+05:30
Arun Shouri has right to express his views on the issue, but they come without any responsibility. It would be more credible when in power. There are similar statements made by our PM in favor of the deal, why not look into those? Don't you think the existing nuclear scientists who are responsible to run the existing nuclear plants would raise objections if they were in disagreement? See the opposition of this deal coming from Pakistan (who wants a similar deal too) and china. I wonder why would they oppose us having such a deal when its not in our interest.

» It is simple
Posted by Pattabi on 2008-07-04 09:11:24.190384+05:30
We do not have uranium. When BJP tried to have a deal with Bill Clinton, he demanded that India should sign in NPT after destroying its nuclear weapon. So, the BJP did not go for it. That was correct. But now mighty Bush want to have relation with the India as India is emerging, so he agreed to India for civil nuclear cooperation with any country without signing NPT and with an indirect condition of not to perform another nuclear weapon test, which BJP oppose, but Kalam says we do not have to test it again and again, we need to worry when China or Pakistan do tests, at that time we/they can break the deal, till then we can buy uranium for our reactors. Also any country will afraid to stop trade with the emerging India. So, it needs simple guts which Cong. has. Communist does not have enough guts and they are against America. Why does Vajpayee not against the deal now? because the deal is okay for the India. The deal is a simple issue but communist over enlarged it.
