Kolkata, Mar 5 : KFC, the US-based fast-food chain, is working on at least 15 new items that it plans to introduce over the next two years.
The fried chicken major, with 70 items already on the Indian menu, is going to launch a new one soon. "The new item will be different from our existing ones," said Unnat Verma, director (marketing), KFC India.
"We have done a lot of research and have noticed a few gaps in terms of taste and pricing," he said.
KFC has launched the Twister or Toasted Wrap in the overseas market with a new tagline, 'Life Tastes Better With KFC.' The variant is yet to find its way into the Indian market. "It will take around a year to launch the Toasted Twister in the Indian market," said Verma.
KFC has launched vegetarian counterparts of its items, keeping in mind the many vegetarians in India. Around 40% of the products are in the veg category.
Most of the 15 new items will be chicken.
KFC, a group company of Yum! Brands Inc, set foot in India in 1995. The company has planned to push the number of its outlets to 100, from the present 34, in the next two years. It has overcome initial price-point barriers and brought the price point down to Rs 25 for a chicken item.
"We have done a lot of research to achieve correct pricing of our products in the last three years," said Verma. The average-spend per head at a KFC outlet is around Rs 70.
"Around 75% of our new outlets will be located in metros, but we will also look at tier II cities," Verma said. The company has planned an aggregate investment of Rs 200-300 crore for the next two years. It is looking at malls and technology parks as possible destinations.
