Jet Airways launched flights to Kuwait and Bahrain, becoming India's first private air carrier to fly to the Gulf, and plans to start services to China.
"We have launched daily direct flights to Kuwait and Bahrain. Expanding our international network, we now plan to start flight on Mumbai-Shanghai-San Fransisco route, for which we expect permission shortly," Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal said launching the inaugural flight to Bahrain.
The airline today also launched three other daily direct flights -- Kochi-Kuwait, Delhi-Kuwait, Kochi-Bahrain.
On the company's future expansion plans, Goyal said Jet was going to launch two new flights to Muscat and Doha (Qatar) from Calicut from January 23.
The profitable Gulf sector was, till date, served only by the national carriers -- the erstwhile Air India, Indian and Air India Express. Their only competition being Emirates, Kuwait Airways, Gulf Air and Qatar Airlines.
Five million Indians are living and working in the Gulf and more than 35 per cent of international traffic from India is headed to that sector.
With the launch of Kochi-Kuwait and Kochi-Bahrain flights, Jet Airways also made its first international foray out of Kerala.
The airline currently operates 355 flights daily to 55domestic and international destinations, including New York (JFK and Newark), Toronto, Brussels, London (Heathrow), Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo, Bangkok, Kathmandu and Dhaka.
Jet Airways also plans to expand its international operations to other cities in North America, Europe and Africa in phases.
