New Delhi, Aug 1: Despite the burden of growing carriage fees across delivery platforms and problems of limited bandwidth, international knowledge broadcasters like Discovery and National Geographic are waking upto opportunities arising out of increasing number of DTH households and changing pattern of viewership in the urban pockets, based on which they are expanding their offering in the country by adding on niche channels.

Two months after National Geographic Networks announced the launch of three niche channels on music, wildlife and adventure, along with the High Definition (HD) TV version of their main channel, Discovery Networks has decided to launch three more channels on science and turbo ('on all things motored' is how they describe it) and a HD version of the main discovery channel.

The general manager of Discovery Networks, India, Rahul Johri, said, "We are witnessing television consumption in India shifting towards high quality, credible and entertaining programmes and an increase in demand for an alternative to soaps, movies and sitcoms. The changing market dynamics, research and viewer feedback suggests that our three new niche channels will satisfy the demands of an aspirational India."
