



New Delhi, June 2: The hike in the prices of essential items pushed inflation up to 4.74% for the week ended May 20.
Wholesale price based inflation rose 0.42% from the previous week’s 4.32%, but was still lower than the price rise of 5.38% last year, according to data released by the government.
The wholesale price index (WPI) was up 0.3% to 201.1 points, compared with 192 points last year, as primary and manufactured articles became costlier.
The index for primary articles group went up 1.2% to 199.7 points due to increase in the prices of food, non-food and minerals. It was 188.3 points a year ago.
The food articles group index rose 1.4% due to a spurt in the prices of tea (27%), poultry chicken (8%), fish-marine (4%), vegetables and bajra (3% each), milk (2%), fruits, barley, gram, pork and jowar (1% each), but eggs (1%) were cheaper.The index for the non-food articles group was up 0.2% to 176.8 points due to higher prices of raw rubber (3%), groundnut seed (2%) and raw jute (1%).
But, prices declined for sunflower (3%), copra, raw cotton and niger seed (1% each).
