Chennai, Jul 5 : The National Affirmative Action Council (NACC) has managed to convince all CEOs to ensure integration of SC/STs and backward classes into their workforce and work culture to attain an inclusive growth, JJ Irani, NACC chairman and Tata Sons director said here on Saturday.
Delivering a special address at a session on Affirmative Action, organised by CII, Irani said the efforts and initiatives of industry have not only been appreciated but also been recognised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The PM has asked the Council to expedite and expand the programme in a big way, he added.
Emphasising India Inc’s stand on quota system Irani said, “The CII is totally against quotas, reservations and allocations. The industry is fully aware and in favour of raising the bars of all people, including the so-called SC/ST and other classes. The industry will treat everyone as same and will give chance on the merit basis. The industry is not here to solve the nation’s problem but will help the government get rid of a particular evil through an affirmative action programme.”
Pinpointing the importance of having people from SC/ST and other classes in the workforce and work culture, Irani, however, said the prospects were better and brighter for the industry. “India is growing fast and will continue to grow in the years to come. By involving the so-called people, industry will not be at any loss; rather they benefit with two weighted advantages, namely bringing down the attrition rate and more productivity.”
The industry has exceeded most of the targets set by the Council in the first year and will continue to do so in the years to come.
By and large, the responsible people in the government, bureaucrats and politicians have appreciated the industry's efforts in this regard and hope to see the industry is allowed to do so on its own, Irani said.
He said it was found that initiatives in the southern and western regions have been encouraging and the northern and eastern regions need to address certain gaps. Explaining in detail, he said unlike people in the service sector, particularly in the IT sector, who are very mobile, people of these classes will stick to their workplace and will be happy with their jobs and other aspects. These people found to be more hardworking and they want to prove that they are worthy of their respective companies.
