India to focus on coal-laboration with US

New Delhi, Dec 13: With the aim to introduce international best practices in the domestic coal sector, the government has decided to strengthen cooperation with the United States in the sector with focus on the adoption of green coal technologies.

As a step in this direction, the coal working group (CWG) set up under the India-US Energy Dialogue had decided to establish a business advisory council consisting representatives from the business/industry, academia and other non governmental organisations.

According to the top officials of the coal ministry the council would be co-chaired by a representative each from the US and India, and consist about eight members from each country to provide expert guidance on priority items of interest identified by the CWG.

The CWG also agreed on a host of areas where both thecountries could cooperate. These include coal preparation and utilisation, mine safety and productivity, mine closure and reclamation, in-situ coal gasification, coalbed, coal mine and abandoned mine methane, ash utilisation, emerging technologies including carbon-dioxide capture and storage and future technology path.

Collaborative efforts would also be undertaken with regards to sharing of tools and equipment between the organisations in India and US that could lead to economic and environmental benefits to both the countries.

The two countries have also agreed for licensing and transfer of technologies.

Indian power sector is largely coal based and the US model, which still contributes 50% of the total electric power generated, would bring in the best to Indian coal industry also, senior coal ministry officials said.

India is also looking at cooperation with US on generation of hydrogen from coal. The US has already made an initiative on reducing its dependence on imported oil by launching a Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, which aims to develop commercially viable cars that run on pollution free hydrogen by 2020.
