



New Delhi, Dec 29: The external affairs ministry has touched base with the heads of Indian missions in Maldives, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The ministry has enquired about the well being of non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin in the wake of the Tsunami disaster.
In Indonesia, the extent of damage is being assessed. All embassy officials and properties in Jakarta and Medan are safe. In Medan, the 5,000-strong PIO community and around 500 NRIs are also reported safe, an official update said on Wednesday.
Besides eight Indians who have died in the tidal wave disaster in Sri Lanka, Thailand has reported the death of one Indian and one injured in Phuket. All embassy officials there are safe.
The Indian embassy has flown consular officials to Phuket to provide assistance to Indian nationals who may be holidaying there.
In Malaysia, the extent is being ascertained but all NRIs and PIOs and embassy officials and properties are safe, the official statement said.
The external affairs ministry is co-ordinating relief operations to Sri Lanka and Maldives with Indian defence forces and home ministry.
Three vessels have been launched for Male, they are INS Mysore, INS Udaygiri and INS Aditya. INS Mysore has two helicopters and others have one each. INS Aditya is carrying water and has a water purification plant.
