New Delhi, Jan 17: India does not want defence posts along the line of control (LoC). In a significant step aimed at confidence building with Pakistan, India has, in the third round of composite dialogue process (CDP) with Pakistan, suggested that the two sides could decide against having defence posts along the LoC.
Briefing newspersons after the talks between the foreign secretaries, external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna said India had proposed holding of brigadier-level flag meetings at the frontier. He said foreign secretary Shyam Saran had conveyed to his Pakistan counterpart Riaz Mohammad Khan India’s concerns over terrorism, but Islamabad had responded negatively on this aspect despite giving an assurance at the highest level.
Marking the launch of the third round of CDP, Pakistan raised the issue of India commenting on the situation in Balochistan. Responding to this, the foreign secretary told the Pakistan side that India made the comment because a “certain situation” of legitimate “concern” had developed in the neighbourhood. The Indian side denied all allegations of fomenting trouble in Balochistan.
He said the Pakistan side gave its “preliminary observations” on the draft MoU handed over to Islamabad in October 2005 on measures to reduce risks of accidental or unauthorised use of nuclear weapons.
Both countries adjudged the launch of the bus services to and from Amritsar, Lahore and Nankana Sahib as well as between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad as “positive achievements.”
They exchanged the schedule for expert-level meetings on other issues of the composite dialogue including Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, Tulbul navigation project and terrorism and drug trafficking.
These issues would be discussed on Wednesday, Mr Sarna added.
