Kolkata, July 6: Indal president and chief executive officer (CEO) SK Tamotia has expressed his happiness over railway minister Laloo Prasad Yadav’s announcement that aluminium body would be used for railway wagons.
Indal, a subsidiary of Aditya Birla group-controlled Hindalco, has been actively involved in the development of this application.
“The aluminium wagons being developed will replace 6 tonne of steel with 3 tonne of aluminium and because of the unique properties of aluminium, this will reduce the tare weight by 3 tonne, thereby increasing the per wagon payload,” Dr Tamotia said.
Trial orders had already been placed by the Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO), ministry of railways, and Indal had developed and was supplying the requisite aluminium sections and sheets, he said.
He added, “I believe that this will go a long way to popularise the use of aluminium as a viable alternative material for railway wagons, increasing wagon life from earlier 10 years for steel wagons to 25 years for aluminium wagons.”
Although the cost for aluminium wagons would be higher by about Rs 3,00,000, the pay-back period would be less than three years, he claimed.
