Mumbai, Feb 5 : The brand IPL just doesn’t seem to stop buzzing. The Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction has been delayed till Feb 16-17. It was scheduled on February 8. The reasons for delay could not be ascertained, but industry insiders say that it is because all the franchisers, who are supposed to bid for the players, were not available on February 8.

Industry sources also say IPL will soon announce another round of bids for the IPL title sponsor for the next three years. The bid amount will be above Rs 200 crore.

Lalit Modi, chairman, IPL, told FE, “We never said the auction will be held on February 8. Instead, we said that on February 8 we would decide when to organise the auction.” A media release after the franchiser bid clearly stated that player auction was scheduled on February 8.

Sony Entertainment Television has dropped plans of showing the auction live. Sneha Rajani, business head, SET Max, said, “Initially we decided to showcase the auction live. However, it is going to be a day-long programme and will go on for many hours. So we have changed the plans of showing it live.”

Each IPL team will have 16 players, including four international players. IPL has decided that the base and the ceiling cap for each team (for 16 players) will be between $3.3 million and $5 million. Modi added, “We have signed 84 players and each one of them has a separate price tag. We will disclose the individual player rate only to the franchisers.”

A section of the media (not FE) has mentioned the separate price points of different players, segmenting them into various categories like iconic players, international players, Under 21 players and Ranji Trophy players. Shrugging off these terminologies, Modi said, “For the franchisers there will be just Indian and international players to choose from.”
