The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Monday condemned the attack on NDTV in Ahmedabad by a right wing Hindu outfit and deplored the use of might and force to gag media which is exposing “uncomfortable” facts.
INS president Bahubali S Shah said that attacks on media are increasing by the day and “those uncomfortable with the exposure of facts and truth are trying to gag the media by using might and force”.
“This kind of act displays scant regard for the law of the land and growing level of non-tolerance and disrespect towards the Constitution of India,” Shah said in a statement.
Noting that all who believe in democratic values should condemn such acts, he said, “the government should not condone or tolerate such acts as it will otherwise embolden such miscreants to take law into their own hands.”
Asking the authorities to take necessary punitive action against the attackers, Shah said that such move will deter violent acts by any person, group in future.
“This will instill a sense of trust and confidence in democracy,” he added.
Some 20 activists of ‘Hindu Samarajya Sena’ attacked the private channel’s office on Saturday and assaulted two staffers to protest the news channel’s SMS poll with noted painter M F Husain as a contender for the Bharat Ratna.
