The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has criticised Yoga guru Baba Ramdev for his remarks against doctors practising modern medicine and over his claims on cancer cure.

The IMA said Ramdev had allegedly remarked during an ongoing yoga camp here that doctors are ‘propagators of diseases and are encashing on patients' illness’.

The apex body of medicos has challenged the popular guru over his claims of curing diseases such as cancer and AIDS through yogic methods like pranayama (a breathing exercise).

Talking to reporters here yesterday, National President (elect) of IMA Ashok Adhav, along with local unit chief B K Sharma, Vice-President Y S Deshpande and Secretary Varsha Dhawale, said doctors sincerely try to control and cure diseases and alleviate the sufferings of the patients.

Acknowledging the importance of yoga, IMA functionaries pointed out that every medical stream has its advantages, disadvantages and limitations, and said there should be mutual respect for doctors practising different methods.

"If Baba Ramdev is really sincere, he should visit the cancer hospital here which is flooded with patients and offer his 'magical' treatment free of charge," Adhav said.

Adhav said as per the government norms, patients can not be treated by unqualified doctors (quacks), and requested the authorities concerned to check Ramdev's credentials before allowing him to advice patients and prescribe medicines.

"The importance of prevention of diseases by vaccines can not be undermined. Following research in allopathy, vaccines have eradicated diseases like small pox, polio, pertusis and rubella," Deshpande said.
