New Delhi: In order to cash in on the emerging growth areas like nanotechnology and biotechnology, Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi, Bombay and Roorkee are drawing their respective research road-map to generate intellectual property (IP).

The three IITs have identified these cutting edge technologies as their thrust areas for the next couple of years, where the greater focus would be to draw more funds for conducting research in these areas.

IIT Bombay is presently forming research groups and at a later stage, it is also considering to collaborate with the industry for research and development. “We have formed a separate entity to take up the quantum of work in these emerging areas for IIT Bombay,” IIT Bombay professor Deepak B Phatak said.

Bioinformatics is yet another key area for IIT Bombay, where it is already working with a Pune-based Persistent Systems Private Limited to take up the research from conceptual stage to the product formation stage.

IIT Roorkee too has defined nanotechnology and biotechnology among the key areas for the next couple of years. IIT Roorkee is considering to create IP in the areas of nanotechnlogy and biotechnology.

“We are working towards creating IPs in the areas like biotechnology, nanotechnology and nanosciences. These are the areas where IP can be created by our institute in a year or so,” IIT Roorkee director Dr Prem Vrat said.

As reported earlier by eFE, IIT Roorkee is also setting up centre of excellence for nanotechnology and nanosc-iences. “IP is on the high priority for IIT Roorkee and we have a cell that works to identify new emerging areas for IP,” Dr Vrat said.

“The future belongs to nanomaterials and biotechnology, realising which our institute is strengthening the research cap-ability in these two areas,” IIT Delhi deputy director Dr DP Kothari said. For the first time, IIT Delhi has earmarked a separate fund of Rs 5 crore for res-earch in the five areas including embedded systems, rural industrialisation, environment sciences besides, nanotechnology and biotechnology.

He said IIT Delhi has also been approached by the R&D firms for holding research in these areas.
