IIIT Joins Hands With NASA Lab For Low-cost Robots

Hyderabad, March 12: In its pursuit of achieving international standards, the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has joined hands with Jet Processing Lab of National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) of the US to develop low-cost robots to help the space organisation in various applications.

The robotics department of IIIT is also working on developing low-cost robots for education, industrial and personal applications for the Indian and global markets. These robots can be utilised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Talking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr Arin Kybhave, master in robotics and PhD student of Carneige Mellon University, said he in association with 30 other PhD students of IIIT is working on developing the low-cost robots.

The students have been working on developing proto-types and the first one will be ready in next three months which will be sent back to Jet Processing Lab for correction. While the second one will be ready by December and will be marketed to NASA and global markets, he said. “The NASA Lab itself is asking for 10,000 such robots to be used in their space agency for various purposes,” he said adding, “they will be sold in the open market like personal computers and all the necessary accessories and services will be available locally,” Mr Kybhave said.

While NASA Lab will provide the mechatronic, embedded firmware, IIIT will develop the necessary software, applications technologies, he said.

In one of the major technological developments, the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) of the US and Trigem of South Korea is working on introducing PCTVT - a low cost PC with a feature of TV tuner, internet phone connection, keyboard to operate computer, camera, video phone.

Disclosing this at a press conference to showcause the IIIT’s technological developments over the last three years, the mentor of IIIT and professor of Carnegie Mellon University Prof Raj Reddy said that all the three partners are working towards introducing the low-cost PCTVT in India to enable the users to have access to information, entertainment, communications and video conferencing with others.
