New Delhi: Efforts to bring about a reconciliation between the CPI(M) leadership and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has begun in earnest but the latter on Tuesday suggested that it was for the party to extend an offer to him first for any comeback.
‘‘I wont appeal’’ Chatterjee, who is currently visiting his erstwhile constituency Bolpur, told newsagencies on Tuesday. ‘‘I did not call for a review or reconsideration of the decision of the party which took the step after consideration. They (CPI-M) have a right to take a decision,’’ he said.
That moves had been initiated, however, to try and forge a patch up was clear when West Bengal transport minister Subhas Chakraborty, a known supporter of the Speaker, asserted that he had written to CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose on bringing Chatterjee back. Chakraborty has acknowledged his communication with Biman Bose, saying that ‘‘Chatterjee is a veteran and a top-ranking leader of the party and people like him should not be kept out. He should be taken back’’.
Chatterjee, however, expressed ignorance about such moves, contending that he had only read about them in the media. ‘‘Nobody told me anything about this,’’ he said. The Left veteran, who has not reconciled to the decision to expulsion from primary membership of the CPI(M) seven months ago by the party leadership, has held the stand that he has not done anything that could warrant such a harsh action against him.
Chatterjee, so far has maintained that he has decided to retire from electoral politics and would not be seeking re-election. He has said he would base himself in Bolpur and engage himself in social work there. Shortly after the Congress-led UPA won the confidence vote in the Lok Sabha in July last year, the CPI(M) had expelled Chatterjee for disobeying the party whip.
