New Delhi, July 30 : Japanese car major Honda Motor Company is contemplating launching liquefied petroleum gas-powered cars in India. Kingini International recently got the petroleum ministry’s nod to procure 400 kg of LPG from India for further export to Honda, Japan, for R&D.
According to ministry officials, Honda wanted to be sure that the automobile kits manufactured would suit India. This is because Indian and Japanese LPG have different specifications. While LPG in Japan is 100% propane, India’s is 99.5% butane-based.
Refusing to give details of his company’s plans to launch LPG-driven car in India, Hiroshi Shimizu, director, sales & marketing, Honda Siel Cars India, said, “Honda is continuously exploring new fuel options that support environment friendly and sustainable technologies to power all Honda products. Our interest in alternate fuels such as CNG and LPG is part of this endeavour.”
Car makers in India and China have shifted to top gear to introduce alternative-fuel vehicles due to the ongoing spurt in global crude oil prices.
