Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, April 8: Hindalco Industries Ltd, the Aditya Birla Group’s flagship company, has signed an memorandum of understanding with the Orissa government for a world-class aluminium complex in Orissa. Hindalco will invest Rs 11,000 crore to set up an alumina refinery of one million tonne per annum, an aluminium smelter plant of 2.60 lakh tonne per annum, a captive power plant of 650 mw and bauxite mines of three million tonne annual capacity. “Hindalco is aspiring to become a major player in the international aluminium market. Today’s MoU would take us a step further in that direction,” said chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla. Asserting that the aluminium complex will be world-class in every sense such as capacity, technology, production and quality, he assured that the project will be completed in four years time from the date the MoU is converted into an agreement.

The MoU document was signed by Hindalco managing director Debu Bhattacharjee and Orissa industries principal secretary Gokul Pati in the presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik and Mr Birla.

Hindalco’s refinery will come up at Kansariguda in Koraput district on 2147 acres while the smelter and the captive power plant will be located at Lapanga in Sambalpur district on 3739 acres. Hindalco has been promised that it will be provided with the Kodingamali mines with bauxite reserve of 91.40 million tonne for which the MoU was signed with state-owned Orissa Mining Corporation way back in 1997. The aluminium company has also been assured of some more bauxite deposits, according to Hindalco official sources.

Analysts tracking the sector said that the aluminium inventory on the LME had dropped to 5.5 lakh tonnes from 7 lakh tonnes. The decline in inventory levels could be guaged from the fact that inventory levels of aluminium at the LME were at 12 lakh tonne, when the aluminium prices used to hover at $1,400 per tonne, analysts said.
