Kolkata, Sep 5: Having the Nano plant in West Bengal is not just like any other investment in the state, there is a great sense of pride involved in it, according to Sishir Bajoria, managing director, IFGL Refractories Ltd.
IFGL has a global presence with manufacturing facilities in the US, the UK, the Czech Republic, Germany, China, Brazil and India. Bajoria, on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Comemrce & Industry (Ficci), said, “A few days before, I had to hire a taxi in London. The driver asked me if I was an Indian.
Then he said that it was a major achievement for India to come up with a car like Nano, costing only 1300 pounds and the driver himself would be able to afford it.”
Ficci chairman CK Dhanuka said the Tatas are not likely to shift the Nano plant from Singur to some other states, as this would involve at least an additional six months time. “Resolving the dispute would take hardly another 7-10 days and immediately after that Ratan Tata can resume work in Singur.
“But if he decides to take it to another site in some other state, it will take at least another six months to roll out the Nano from there,” Dhanuka said. Hasim Abdul Halim, speaker of the state legislative Assembly, who was present at the Ficci session, said West Bengal has entered into the process of industrialisation just 7-8 years back and so there is a transformation going on. “Bengalis are conservative, and so it will take time for the people in the state to adjust to the systems of transformation,” Halim said.
