Chandigarh: The Haryana government has launched a new scheme to encourage energy conservation in villages of the state. Under the scheme, the deserving panchayats would be awarded cash prizes ranging between Rs 20,000 and Rs 4 lakh for popularising the applications of various non-conventional and renewable sources of energy in their respective villages.

An official spokesman said on Thursday that the government had invited applications from the panchayats that had adopted measures to conserve electricity in their villages. Panchayats bagging the first, second and third prize at state-level would be awarded a cash amount of Rs 4 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively, while panchayats bagging first position at district-level would be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and panchayats bagging second position Rs 25,000. It is a welcome step by the state Govt.; provided the benefit of scheme is given honestly to the deserving. In fact, other states should follow it. Also, NGO and State Govt. should help the concerned how to save the POWER.
