Chandigarh, Sep 25: The Haryana State Electronics Development Corporation (Hartron) is planning to diversify its operations into newer areas and is scouting for business opportunities outside the state.

The corporation which, so far, has been taking up projects like voter ID cards or smart cards, now wants to expand its portfolio in the power and other sectors by supplying equipments, providing managed services/facilities and extend the e-governance initiatives to other states.

Interacting with FE, V.S Kundu, special secretary & director IT, Haryana said, “Apart from piloting the smart cards project in Haryana, Hartron is planning to take up projects in the power sector as well through channel partners in other regions. The board of directors has given the clearance for channel partnerships. We have already bid for computerising a power utility’s billing system in Uttaranchal in partnership with Techlabs, which has experience in computerised billing. We are also exploring the opportunity to implement our e-governance initiatives in the North-Eastern states."

Research is going on at the Hartron’s electronic R&D center in Ambala, to develop new software for distribution management, networking and grid monitoring for the power utilities.

Kundu further added, “Outside Haryana, we had only done the voter ID card projects in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chandigarh. But now we are thinking of going ahead with new initiatives like smart cards in other states as well.

“The smart cards project in Haryana is likely to cost around Rs 150 crore and will be complete within 15 months of approval. We have sent the detailed project report to Government of India and approval is expected soon."

Hartron is also planning to revamp its widespread franchisee network in the state. A consultant has been hired for developing a new model of managing and monitoring the franchisees. “There are about 42 franchisees of Hartron in the state at present but the quality control practices are not happening in a professional manner. So with the help of the consultant, we will be laying down the parameters for developing proper infrastructure as well as managing and monitoring the franchisee network.

Human resource development will be the focus and we’ll provide computer training to the management. Our Instrument Design & Development Center at Ambala is also working on meeting the individual requirements of the entrepreneurs by providing training to them,”informed Kundu.
