Mumbai, Mar 6: Four Indians have made it to the top eight in the list of the world’s billionaires 2008, released by Forbes Magazine on Thursday. They include non-resident Indian and steel baron Lakshmi Mittal (4th), Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani (5th), followed by Anil Ambani, chairman, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, and Kushal Pal Singh, chairman of the DLF Group (8th).
The richest person in Forbes’ annual list is American investor Warren Buffett, who has overtaken software czar Bill Gates and Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu to claim the title. Buffet has a net worth of $62 billion, higher than Slim’s $60 billion and Gates’ $58 billion. Ingvar Kamprad and family of Sweden, at $31 billion, are in the seventh place.
Mittal, valued at $45 billion, is at the helm of the world’s largest steel making company, Arcelor Mittal, and holds 44% stake in it. He lives in London.
Mukesh Ambani is valued at $43 billion. His younger brother Anil Ambani’s net worth rose by $23.8 billion, the biggest gain in the last one year; he is valued at $42 billion.
KP Singh has been recognised at the richest real estate baron in the world. The listing of his company, DLF, last year helped his fortune jump to $30 billion from $10 billion a year ago.
The other Indians in the list include Ravi and Shashi Ruia, the brothers who run Essar Group, who have occupied the 43rd position with a net worth of $15 billion. Azim Premji, chairman, Wipro, is at the 30th position with a net worth of $12.7 billion. The list also has Senapathy Gopalakrishnan, co-founder and CEO at Infosys, trader and investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and Rahul Bajaj, chairman, Bajaj Auto Ltd, each with a net worth of $1 billion.
