Mumbai, Aug 25: Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) StorageWorks division has come up with a data storage manageability solution called ‘Extreme data store system’ focusing on the fast growing storage demand in the media & entertainment sector.

According to industry estimates, the storage market in India is currently $375-$400 million and is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 13% to $600 million by 2011. HP is currently in talks with major media and entertainment companies in India and will ship solutions by the end of this year.

Donovan Nickel, vice president, network attached storage, StorageWorks division, HP said, “The Indian market as of now is growing rapidly and we want to target the animation and content development industry. With the 3G coming to India, we are also eyeing the communications companies as these will see a huge demand for large data storage.”

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) says that the animation industry in India is expected to grow 31% to Rs 2,050 crore by 2009.

Nickel added that there is a huge demand for data storage among the content distributors who store data for a limited period and do not add IP to the product. Manoj Suvarna, country head for StorageWorks division, HP India, said, “It’s important that the system is cost effective as well as scaleable in India. Therefore, we are targeting India with storage systems that start from 246 terabyte to a petabyte (1024 terabyte) to multiple petabytes that include the computer system, storage system and software.” He added that HP will bring the storage system at $3 per gigabyte, less than the industry rate of $5-15 per gigabyte.

The data shipped last year in India was about 60,000 terabytes or 60 petabytes and by the mid-2010, it is expected to double. “We are trying to get ready for the Web 2.0 boom when the demand will double. Though India will definitely be almost a year behind the US and Europe, it is an important market for us, especially the communications market,” said Suvarna.
