Kolkata: Hewlett Packard India is talking to mobile handset manufacturers for launching Snapfish on handsets on the lines of Snapfish Mobile already present in developed markets like US.

The company has already tied up with Sony Ericsson to instal Snapfish hot keys on the handsets to share, print and store photos from mobile phones. “We see it as a new channel for making photo publishing more popular,” said V Narayanan, director (retail publishing, imaging & printing group, Asia Pacific and Japan ) of Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.

Present at the inauguration of photographs of Sumantra Banerjee in Kolkata, he said with camera phones becoming increasingly popular in developing countries like India , there is a growing need for photo storage and publishing. The company, which is betting big on India, has already started co-branding with modern retail outlets like Spencers’.

“We have almost 150 retail photo solution outlets in India . While many of which are in retail stores, some are inside other facilities like photo studios,” he said. HP India is also tying up with retail majors like Future Group and Landmark.

To make Snapfish popular, HP has also tied up with social networking sites like Flickr and Myspace. Photographs stored in these social networking sites can easily be exported and stored in snapfish. “Instead of trying to build similar capabilities, we are complementing the websites,” Narayanan said.

According to him, unlike developed markets like Australia , plain printing has not gone down in India . “Products like photo books, calendars, story books and posters have become popular in other countries. Although it is a niche market at present, but we are getting good response from India ,” he said.
