Vadodara: The Gujarat government has blamed the Centre for hiking Amul milk prices by Rs 1 per litre in the state.
The decision by the Gujarat Cooperatives Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) of increasing milk prices by Rs 1 per litre for all the six brands of Amul sold by it in the state will affect the common man, Gujarat agriculture minister Dilip Sanghani said.
All the milk dairies located in 13 districts across the state are members of this Federation (GCMMF). “I had written to agriculture minister Sharad Pawar last month requesting him to grant subsidy of Rs 220 crore to milk producers in the state,” Sanghani said.
Had this demand been conceded by the Centre, the hike in milk prices could have been avoided, he asserted.
“Despite writing to Pawar and raising the issue at a meeting of state agriculture ministers convened by the Centre in New Delhi about a fortnight ago, I have not received any reply,” Sanghani claimed.
However, minister of state for small scale, medium scale and micro industries, Dinsha Patel, has defended the GCMMF’s decision, saying it will benefit small and marginal farmers who are milk producers. (
Patel represents Nadiad parliamentary constituency where ‘white revolution’ took place after setting up of Amul Dairy at Anand. Anand was apart of Nadiad until delimitation.
Meanwhile, former union minister and senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela has also welcomed the Federation’s decision and said that it is aimed at benefiting the milk producers. BJP MLA Madhu Srivastava and chairman of the Baroda Milk Dairy has, however, decided to hold price hike for now. Baroda dairy is one of the 13 districts milk dairies which is a member of GCMMF.
According to Srivastava, the administrative wing of the GCMMF had not consulted him and other dairy chairmen before deciding to hike milk prices.
