



New Delhi, Aug 9: The country’s foodgrain output in 2003-04 has been estimated at 212.05 million tonne. It will fall short of the target by 7.95 million tonne.
The output will be marginally less than the record output of 212.85 million tonne in 2001-02. In 2002-03 foodgrains output dipped to 174.19 million tonne on account of drought.
According to the fourth advance estimate of agriculture production released on Monday, rice output is likely to be 87 million and wheat 72.06 million tonne. Coarse cereals’ output is estimated at 37.76 million tonne and pulses 15.23 million tonne.
Foodgrain output in the kharif (summer) season is estimated at 112.04 million tonne, while that in the rabi (winter) season is 100.01 million tonne.
Earlier the third advance estimate released in the first week of June placed total foodgrains output at 210.78 million tonne. The second advance estimate made in February, this year placed the total foodgrains output at 212.20 million tonne. The third advance estimate had lowered the foodgrains output by 1.24 million tonne, apprehending the damage done to the standing wheat crop on account of the sudden spurt in temperature in March/April.
According to the fourth advance estimate oilseeds output is likely to be 25.143 million tonne as against 15.058 million tonne in the previous year. Cotton output is likely at 13.788 million bales as against 8.716 million bales in the previous year.
The production of jute and mesta is likely to be at 11.197 million bales as against 11.377 million bales in the previous year.
The sugarcane output is likely at 238.176 million tonne as against 261.575 million tonne in the previous year.
