New Delhi, Sep 4: Bajaj Auto chairman Rahul Bajaj on Thursday said that the government should seriously look into archaic land acquisition rules in the country in order to deal with combative issues like Singur and demanded a change in the rules.
“The land acquisition rules in our country are based on old British era laws, leading to the eruption of a lot of controversies during land acquisition for industrialization, whether at Singur or in Orissa for Posco’s steel project, the government should should take measures to make land acquisition rules more contemporary,” Bajaj told reporters on the sidelines of SIAM’s annual convention.
Bajaj said that the Nano project won’t be delayed beyond October as the Tatas have options before them to manufacture the vehicle at its other facilities in Pune or some place in Uttarakhand.
The Singur row erupted when the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee demanded the return of 400 acres of land to the farmers who were ‘unwilling’ sellers.
On Tuesday, the company issued a statement stating suspension of work at Singur and signalling its preparation to relocate the plant and machinery to an alternate site.
Commenting on the sale of the two-wheelers in the country, Bajaj said that until and unless the Reserve Bank of India relaxes the present tight monetary policy there are hardly any chances of the two-wheeler industry witnessing double-digit growth.
