New Delhi, May 28: Still harbouring to implement 27% OBC quota in the elite educational institutions from the current session, the government has decided to approach Supreme Court again and request it for an early hearing on the issue, which has been referred to the Constitution Bench.
Claiming that the government has not put the issue in cold storage, HRD minister Arjun Singh said,” Once it goes to the Constitution Bench, we will make a request for an early hearing and will try our best to implement quota from the current session itself.”
The Apex court, earlier, had declined to vacate the stay on implementation of the quota.
To a question on Tamil Nadu government’s views to provide reservation to the minorities on the pattern of Kerala and Karnataka, Singh said the DMK-led government was entitled to do what it desired. “I am not averse to that," he added.
Asked whether the Centre would also take a similar decision, he said it was a larger issue and has to be decided by the Union Cabinet if it had to be adopted at the central level.
Singh, who called on the Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK supremo here, said Karunanidhi wanted to know about the progress made in providing ‘classical language’ status to Tamil as well as the establishment of a deemed university in the name of Periyar.
