Mumbai, March 8: Drug major GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has lost its bid in a US court to block generic versions of its $1 billion asthma drug Flonase being marketed in the country, paving the way for generic manufacturers of the drug, including India’s Cipla, to sell the drug in the US.
In February, a US court had granted GSK’s temporary motion to stop marketing of generic forms of Flonase, a nasal spray, but the order expired early this week. Earlier, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved marketing of the generic form of Flonase in the US, a decision which came much earlier than Glaxo had expected. Glaxo contested the FDA decision in court. Cipla’s managing director Amar Lulla told FE: “Now that the generic has been approved for the US market, we will market Flonase there.” However, with several generic companies planning to enter the market for the drug, the benefits for each company would be proportionately lower, he cautioned.
Interestingly, Glaxo’s suit had halted sales of a generic version of Flonase marketed by Par Pharmaceutical Cos Inc, an ‘authorised’ generic company, to which GSK had licensed the drug.
