New Delhi, Apr 13: The government on Friday gave the green signal for import of all Euro III emission norms compliant bikes of 800 cc and above.
The move paves the way for Harley Davidson and a host of other high capacity bikes from Yamaha and Honda, including Suzuki’s 1,300 cc Hayabusa--the world's fastest bike--to come to India.
Commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath said that the government is looking into suggestions for reducing the 60% import duty (and 43% of other surcharges) on such bikes.
So far, since India hadn’t set emission standards for bikes above 500 cc, no such bikes could be imported into the country. Nath said after co-chairing the meeting of India-US Trade Policy Forum along with US trade representative Susan Schwab, that the Harley cruisers will need to meet only Euro III emission norm for sale in India.
Recently, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Ltd (HMSI) CEO and president Yukihiro Aoshima said the company plans to import higher capacity bikes (500cc and above) for sale in the domestic market.
