New Delhi, April 26:: Geospatial technology magazine Geospatial Today announced the release of the Indian Geospatial Industry Survey 2008 Report by Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Mr Kapil Sibal on Friday.

While releasing the survey, Mr Kapil Sibal highlighted the importance and relevance of geospatial technology. He was candid enough to admit that in today’s time, we can’t trust human beings and it’s here that the role of geospatial technology becomes all the more important.

Commenting on the usefulness of geospatial technology, Mr Sibal talked at length about the role this technology plays in mapping, sanitation and even controlling traffic. While ruing the fact that India has still not realised the potential of geospatial technology, Mr Sibal said that Rs 100 cr has been earmarked for mapping New Delhi which will be completed in next 12 months.

Mr Kapil Sibal said, “Geospatial technology can be very useful in coastal areas which are cyclone-prone and can provide enormous support for fishermen”.

Mr Sibal also highlighted the edge which geospatial technology has over internet. “While on internet, there is overflow of information but geospatial technology provides only useful information which can be use by adding values to the datas,” he said.

Stressing the need on greater public-private partnership, Mr Sibal said the no country can move forward without geospatial technology. He said, “Mapping is required for India to sustain its 9 per cent growth rate”

Mr Kapil Sibal emphatically outlined his vision for geospatial technology saying, ‘geospatial technology will be much bigger than IT and telecom.’
