Kolkata, Sep 18 : General Insurance Employees All India Association, the largest union of insurance employees in the public sector, is likely to launch a countrywide agitation to press for popularising two insurance schemes aimed at giving medical benefit to retired and financially weaker sections of the society.
The schemes, titled `Bhabisya Arogya' and `Universal Health Insurance Scheme', are not being marketed by any of the public sector general insurance players, said PP Ravindranathan, chief advisor of the union.
Kushal Nag, general secretary of the Eastern Zone General Insurance Employees Union, said: "Even a handful of those who have already signed themselves up for getting the benefits of Bhabisya Arogya are being deliberately neglected by the authorities concerned."
He alleged that despite repeated queries, the insurance company concerned, National Insurance Company, has persistently declined to hand over the policy documents to enable file claims of several insured persons.
Through Bhabisya Arogya, introduced in 1999, people can avail themselves of medical insurance cover, after attaining the retirement age, for the rest of their lives without spending anything.
The Universal Health Insurance Scheme, which is subsidised by the central government, is specifically designed for those living below the poverty line (BPL) and marginal people.
