New Delhi, November 6:: State gas utility GAIL India is seeking stake in an LNG plant in Nigeria and has expressed interest in setting up a gas-based petrochemical plant in the west African nation.

"We are interested in sourcing LNG from Nigeria and will be interested in taking stake in future LNG manufacturing plants in that country," GAIL Chairman and Managing Director U D Choubey told reporters after meeting the visiting Nigerian Vice President Jonathan Goodluck here.

GAIL is scouting for LNG for the 2,184 MW Dhabol Power Plant in Maharashtra as also for meeting the gas deficit in the country.

"We expressed interest in importing LNG from Nigeria...

These are preliminary discussions and nothing has been finalised as yet. The Nigerian Vice President has invited us to visit Lagos for further discussion" he said.

Gail also expressed interest in setting up gas gathering station and creating a gas pipeline network in the African nation.

"We also expressed interest in participating in oil and gas field and will bid for oil and gas blocks offered by Nigeria in future," Choubey added.

The state-run company proposed to set up a network to dispense CNG to automobiles as well as a city gas distribution network.

"Depending on the gas composition, we can also set up a petrochemical plant in Nigeria," GAIL CMD said.

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer and is developing gas fields for export.
