Ipoh (Malaysia), May 9: : Former Canada coach Shiv Jagdev has been roped in to train hockey coaches from Punjab.

Punjab Sports Department has invited Jagdev for training the hockey coaches attached with its academies in Jalandhar, Amritsar and Ludhiana for 15 days next month.

Indian team manager for the Azlan Shah Tournament and Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh said, "this step will bring the knowledge level of our local coaches on par with international standards."

Pargat reached in Ipoh this morning after Punjab government cleared his foreign trip on Thursday. He replaces Ramesh Parameswaran as the team's manager.

"We have invited expert Athletics, football and boxing coaches in the past. Inviting Jagdev is in line with the Department's policy of importing knowledge at regular levels," Pargat added.

"Jagdev is a good communicator, has vast experience. Most significantly he can have discussions in local language (Punjabi) also," he added. Jagdev worked as coach with Punjab Sports Department before migrating to Vancouver in Canada. Besides the Canadian national team, he has also coached the United States men's team.

Pargat also said Olympian Virender Singh has been appointed as adviser for the department's women's hockey related programmes. Olympians Balbir Singh and Sukhbir Singh Grewal are the advisers for men's hockey.
